Slave Resistance:
Many slaves resisted to being whipped, they even fought their overseers who tried to stop them. If slaves resisted there were some consequences. Slaves would be sold away to another plantation to be separated from their family, get whipped, or be killed. The book Life of a slave on a Southern Plantation quoted a slaveholder who said, "'Some Negroes are determined never to let a white man whip them...Of course, you must kill them in that case."(p.49). Slaves would often try to be sold off to other plantations hoping that their master would treat them better than they were treated before, of course this plan had no guarantees considering that they would be separated from their families. One way slaves rebelled was by killing or beating up their overseers, this did not benefit the slaves either because they would be sentenced to death. The underground was another resistance to slavery, it was a secret escape from the plantation. Harriet Tubman who's nickname was "Moses" was a former slave who escaped and lead other slaves to the north. She never lost a passenger on the underground railroad and used her visions to guide the slaves to freedom. There are songs that were codes for the underground railroad like, wade in the water, follow the drinking gourd, deep river, and swing low sweet chariot.
Here is a picture of "Moses" or Harriet Tubman who was a very influencial person in the underground railroad
Slave Resistance in 47 47 is all about slave resistance. The cover of the book to the end the book is all about the Underground Railroad and escaping North. If you go to the home page and look at the cover you see that the one boy is looking up at the constellation. The constellation he is looking at is the Big Dipper which leads to the North. Another thing we found that was interesting was that on the first page of the first chapter there are a bunch of stars. As you progress through the book the stars clear up and all that is left is the Big Dipper which again leads the slaves North.
